This excursion takes us to one of the highest and most active volcanoes in Costa Rica, considered one of the most beautiful and impressive in the world.
The volcano is located just an hour from downtown San José.
We will walk around one of the three main craters, and after the hike, we will head to the highest point of the National Park, which is also the second-highest point in Costa Rica. Then, we will descend from the volcano to visit the most important church in Costa Rica, where we will learn about its architecture and the different constructions it has undergone over time.
Additionally, the church is famous for its pilgrimage and the story of the Virgin of the Angels. The site also features a small museum and a holy water fountain.
The tour departs from San José at 6:00 a.m., depending on your hotel's location, as this is the best time to take advantage of optimal visibility conditions at the volcano.
As we leave the city behind, the journey itself becomes part of the experience. Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking landscapes, including stunning views above the clouds, lush green valleys, and picturesque farmlands. The route takes us through areas rich in agriculture, where you’ll see vast fields of vegetables and other crops thriving in the fertile volcanic soil.
As we ascend toward Irazú Volcano, the scenery continuously changes, offering a glimpse into Costa Rica’s diverse ecosystems and rural life. This scenic drive sets the perfect tone for the incredible experience awaiting you at the top.
Upon arriving at Irazú Volcano National Park, your guide will introduce you to Costa Rica’s highest active volcano, explaining its history, geology, and stunning landscapes. At over 3,400 meters (11,260 feet), Irazú offers breathtaking views, and on clear days, you may even see both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. After the guided walk, you’ll have an hour of free time to explore the crater’s edge and capture incredible photos.
Next, we head to Cartago, Costa Rica’s former capital, to visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels. This iconic church, a mix of Byzantine and colonial architecture, houses La Negrita, Costa Rica’s patron saint. A major pilgrimage site, the basilica features beautiful stained-glass windows, a small museum, and a holy water fountain believed to have healing properties. This visit offers a glimpse into the country’s rich history and deep-rooted traditions before returning to San José.
